This article examines how multiple forces, including Hindutva politics, colonial classification, missionary work, and urbanisation, have reconfigured tribal identities in India. Through a critical examination of the terms Adivasi, Tribe, and Vanvasi, and case studies of the Bhil and Gond communities, it explores how religion-led assimilation and historical movements have encroached upon tribal autonomy, culture, and constitutional protections.
